What is an informational interview?

The Informational Interview

In your quest to return to the workforce, you may have so many questions that all the research in the world might not be sufficient to get the information you need. In situations such as these, it's never a bad idea to go straight to the source.

An informational interview gives you the opportunity to sit down with someone in your chosen field and ask questions about career opportunities, educational requirements, performance expectations and any advice they may offer. This can be someone in a company's hiring department, a company executive, an expert in the field or even a former co-worker. Doing this helps you understand what you need in order to get where you want to be.

Tips for a successful interview include dressing appropriately, conducting yourself professionally, bringing prepared questions, taking notes and never asking the individual you're speaking to for a job.
